How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT

Ask ChatGPT "Who's the best plumber near me?" and it won't give you ten blue links. It gives you three or four names, with a reason for each.

If your business isn't one of those names, you're invisible to that customer. They won't scroll to page two, because there isn't one.

More people now start their search for a local business in an AI assistant. ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are becoming a second front door alongside Google Maps.

The good news: ChatGPT doesn't pick businesses at random. It leans on the same public information you can influence, such as your website, your listings and your reviews. This guide explains where that information comes from, and seven practical steps to make your business easier for ChatGPT to find and recommend.

This is 2026. If your business is not recommended by ChatGPT then you are on your way out of business, people are not ask chatgpt for business recommendation, asabusiness owner its very important for you to know how you can achieve this without breaking the bank.

How ChatGPT decides which businesses to recommend

OpenAI hasn't published a formula for local recommendations. What we do know points to three sources of information.

1. Your website, read by OpenAI's crawler. ChatGPT search uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, as long as it doesn't block that crawler (OpenAI).

2. Search engines and business listings. OpenAI also pulls results from third-party search providers. For local searches, ChatGPT has historically drawn on Bing's business data. Some reports suggest it may now use Google as well, and there's no firm consensus yet (Whitespark). The safe move is to keep both your Google Business Profile and Bing Places listing complete.

3. Reviews across the web. When ChatGPT explains a recommendation, it usually points to reviews and reputation. A Whitespark study of 153 local searches across 9 US cities found Facebook was the most common review source on Bing business listings, followed by Yelp. In some categories, sites like TripAdvisor, Porch and Angi mattered most (Whitespark).

The pattern is simple. ChatGPT recommends businesses it can find, understand and trust. Each step below improves one of those three things.

7 steps to get recommended by ChatGPT

1. Make sure ChatGPT can read your website

Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and check that it doesn't block OAI-SearchBot. Many website builders and security plugins now block AI crawlers by default. If yours does, ChatGPT can't read your pages, however good they are.

2. Complete your Google Business Profile and Bing Places listing

Fill in every field: categories, services, hours, service area, photos and a full description. Bing Places is easy to overlook, but it's free and you can import your Google profile in a few minutes.

3. Keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere

AI tools cross-check facts across many sites. If your phone number differs between your website, Yelp and Facebook, that's a reason to doubt you. Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on every listing.

4. Get reviews on more than one platform

Google reviews matter, but don't stop there. Ask happy customers to review you on Facebook and Yelp too, plus the sites that matter in your trade (Angi or Porch for home services, TripAdvisor for restaurants). Reply to reviews, including negative ones.

5. Say clearly what you do, where, and for whom

AI assistants match a request like "emergency plumber in Austin open on Sundays" to businesses that state those facts plainly. Give each main service its own page. Name the areas you serve. List your hours, prices or price ranges, and what makes you different, in plain sentences.

6. Answer the questions customers actually ask

Add an FAQ to your site that answers real questions: "How much does water heater repair cost?", "Do you offer same-day appointments?". These are the exact questions people type into ChatGPT, and clear answers make your business easy to quote.

7. Get mentioned on other trusted sites

Local news, chamber of commerce listings, industry directories, "best of" lists and supplier partner pages all count. Each mention from a trusted source is more evidence that you're a real, established business.

How to check whether ChatGPT recommends you

The quick way is to ask it yourself. Open ChatGPT and try the searches your customers would use, such as "best [your service] in [your city]" or "[your service] near [your neighborhood] open on weekends". Note whether you appear, and which competitors do.

The catch is that one search is a snapshot. Answers change with wording, location and time, and checking Gemini and Claude as well takes a while.

That's why we built the free ChatGPT visibility checker. Enter your business name, service and city. It shows whether the major AI assistants recommend you, and which competitors they name instead. It's free and you don't need an account.

While you're at it, run the Google Maps rank checker. Strong local search visibility and AI recommendations tend to go hand in hand.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI's guidance for website owners describes no paid placement or way to request inclusion in ChatGPT search. Visibility comes from being crawlable and from the public information about your business (OpenAI).

How long does it take to show up?

There's no fixed timeline. Fixing a blocked crawler or a mismatched phone number can help within weeks. Building reviews and mentions takes months. Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed AI rankings.

Do Google reviews affect ChatGPT recommendations?

Possibly. Reviews in general clearly matter, and reports suggest ChatGPT may use Google data for some local searches. The safest approach is to build reviews on Google and on the platforms that matter in your industry.

Is getting recommended by ChatGPT different from ranking on Google?

They overlap a lot. Both reward accurate listings, good reviews and clear website content. The main difference is that ChatGPT gives a few direct answers rather than a page of results, so being in the top handful matters even more.

How do I know if ChatGPT is sending me customers?

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends people to. Look for that source in Google Analytics or your website analytics (OpenAI).
