How to Choose the Right GBP Categories

Your primary category carries the most ranking weight. It tells Google what your business is, so it decides which searches you can show up for. Pick the one that describes your main, highest-earning service, not the broadest word that fits.

Secondary categories are for services you really offer. Each one can bring in extra searches, but a category you do not offer sends the wrong customers and can weaken your profile. A plumber who also fits water heaters can add a water heater category. A plumber who does not fit bathrooms should not add a bathroom one.

You get up to nine secondary slots, but you do not have to fill them. Stick to 2 to 5 secondary categories that match actual services. Once your categories are set, check how you show up with our local map rankings check, which shows where customers in your area really find you.

Frequently asked questions

How many categories can I add to my Google Business Profile?

Google allows 1 primary category and up to 9 secondary categories, 10 in total. You do not need to use them all. Focus on the categories that match your highest-revenue services.

How often does Google update its category list?

Google updates its category list monthly, adding seasonal categories and retiring outdated ones. It is worth checking your categories every few months to make sure the ones you use still exist.

Can changing my GBP primary category hurt my rankings?

Yes. Changing your primary category makes Google re-evaluate where your business should appear, which can cause temporary ranking volatility. Change it only when the new category describes your main service better, and expect a few weeks of movement.
